WORK EXPERIENCE

Software Engineer

Novell, Inc., Provo, UT
  Designed and engineered important parts of a new web portal-based project collaboration tool. 
Sketched tentative layouts and conducted usability studies that helped to improve the organization 
and flow of key components.  Built the components using Java, XML and XSL, while presenting the 
user-interface for each component via HTML and Javascript in a Web browser.  Each component
ran on the Apache Web Server and the Tomcat Java servlet container as a part of Novell's Web
Portal.  Developed good working relationships with the testers in our group, resulting in quicker 
and more accurate bug fixes.

Research Assistant
May, 1999 - April, 2001
Brigham Young University, Provo, UT
   Programmed features of the 'XWeb' Project, a Web-like networking environment in which we 
built browsers and UI components with Java Swing and XML.  UI components included text boxes, 
list summary displays and searchable tables.  Developed pen-based techniques with Java and Java 
Swing such as character-recognition and the use of quick pen strokes to change numerical values, 
dates, and other data values.  Assisted students in understanding and completing their programming
projects.

May, 1998 - May, 1999
Novell, Inc., Provo, UT
    Ran JVM server benchmark tests in order to evaluate performance of the JVM in Netware 5.  
Discovered and reported bugs in the Netware 5 JVM, improving its quality.  Created programs in 
Java and JNDI that accessed and updated NDS directories.  Developed a client/server-based system 
in Java used to test the performance of Web servers and Web proxies and caching systems.  The 
system used Java RMI as the communications medium between the clients and the server, generated 
and sent HTTP requests to the Web server, and interpreted and responded to HTTP responses from 
the Web server.

    Maintained and updated software written in C++ that customer service representatives used to 
record customer information.
 
Summer Intern

Fairchild Semiconductor, West Jordan, UT
   Installed and managed the Web server used for the plant's intranet.  Developed Web pages for 
various departments.  Created and maintained a CGI script using SQL/Embedded SQL Sybase code 
and Visual C++ that allowed the help desk to access and update phone directory information 
for the company.
